8/3 - 9/23 2019

The traveling exhibition “come to bauhaus!”, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Bauhaus in Japan, will start at the Niigata City Art  Museum on August 3 and will tour to five museums by 2020.

With the generous cooperation of the domestic museums and holders of bauhaus’s works, about 300 invaluable works and materials will be exhibited at this exhibition. It is the largest scale bauhaus exhibition to be held in Japan in recent years.

There is a question,

“What is  bauhaus?”

This exhibition approaches from the viewpoint that it is a “school” to the question.

What did the teachers, for example, Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy teach at their classes?

You will see what was going on in their classes through this exhibition.

It is an exhibition you would feel like to enter the bauhaus.

From its revolutionary art education, there were produced a lot of works and designs created from the bauhaus workshops. Masterpieces of the products, such as Wassily Chair by Marcel Breuer and Teapot by Marianne Brandt are also introduced at this show.

There is a section that introduces the activities of the four Japanese students who entered the bauhaus,  so that you can see the deep connection between Japan and the bauhaus.

The Niigata City Art Museum will held a variety of related events during the show.

Please enjoy the contents of a variety of workshops, lectures, collection exhibitions, etc. from the lecture by Hiroshi Kashiwagi (design critic, Professor of Emeritus at Musashino Art University), a member of the bauhaus 100th Anniversary Committee.

Let’s all celebrate the bauhaus 100th anniversary at the Niigata City Art Museum this summer!
